Pamela (center) working with students in class:
Hello, my name is Pamela Pape-Lindstrom and I am a tenured faculty in the Biology Department at Everett Community College. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. Subsequently, I earned a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of South Carolina. My studies at both the undergraduate and graduate level were focused on marine biology. My dissertation research examined feeding ecology of subtidal predators-shrimps and crabs-on prey that lived burrowed in the mud-brittlestars. Fellow graduate students referred to my co-workers and me as “mud-muckers”. I still enjoy mucking about in the mud!
At Everett Community College, I teach a variety of courses. This year, I am teaching the new biology series, Biology 180, 200 and 220. In the past, I have taught cell biology for allied health/biology majors; zoology for biology majors; environmental science for non-majors, ecology (alternate fall quarters) for non-majors and marine biology (alternate spring quarters) for non-majors.
I also serve as an advisor for biology and environmental science transfer students.
I have been a member of the University of Washington FIRST II (Faculty Institute for Reforming Science Teaching) initiative, sponsored by NSF. Some of the goals of this project included; learn active, inquiry-based science teaching techniques that increase student learning; learn and use multiple assessment strategies that provide evidence of student learning. The last year of the initiative includes commitment to participate in national and regional networks that work toward enhancement of undergraduate teaching.
Currently, I am part of the North Cascade and Olympic Science Partnership that is developing and teaching a inquiry-based one year series of science courses for pre-elementary education majors. I am also a co-advisor for the new "Teachers of Tomorrow Club" with Ken White and Rene Kratz.
